TITLE: “Charles Overcomes the World” (John 16:33)

Family and friends of Charles, especially Lillian, Sherri, Dennis, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. Grace and peace be to you from God our Father and from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Our text for today is from St. John chapter sixteen as follows:

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”” (John 16:33 ESV)

Charles “Chuck” P. Sciortino was born September 19, 1931 in Milwaukee, the son of Mariano and Jennie Sciortino. He was baptized and confirmed into Christ in 1958 here in Kenosha. On September 22, 1958 he married his dear wife Lillian. They were married nearly fifty years. He lived most of the rest of his life here in Kenosha, and died in Christ on April 23, in the year of our Lord 2008. “‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” ‘Blessed indeed,’ says the Spirit, ‘that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow them!'” (Rev. 14:13) Continue reading

Sample Accordance Lectionary workspace

I posted recently about using workspaces in Accordance or Libronix for sermon preparation. I use the historic lectionary, so that’s what I’m working on. One of the chief advantages of the one year lectionary is the ability to build and expand upon previous work. Here is my current Accordance workspace for Exaudi:

Workspace for Exaudi using Accordance Bible.

You can see that I have the ESV, NKJV and NA-27 open. In the Old Testament tab I have the BHS instead of NA-27. I also have the Book of Concord (Triglotta) open for the BOC reading for the week. In the bottom I have a user note which includes citations, sermon notes, and other items of interest.

What do you think? Could any of you use this, or something like it? I would be interested in hearing from 3-year lectionary folks, if there is something similar.

Here is the file for Exaudi for Accordance:

The Historic Lectionary and Accordance, Libronix, etc.

I am a regular user of Accordance, from Oak Tree Software. It’s (imo) the premier bible and electronic book software for the Macintosh. One of the projects that I have going on right now, in an effort to focus more of my energy on the primary tasks of the pastor (preaching, administering the Sacraments, and teaching the Sacred Scriptures) is that I am working on utilizing more of the resources at my fingertips for bible study preparation, and especially for sermon preparation.

So my latest project with Accordance has been to develop workspaces for each Sunday of the Church Year. This way each year as I come back to this Sunday, I can quickly and easily build on all of the resources and study I have done in year(s) previous on the same text. I am also using a great program called Leitourgia, but that is for another post.

This project has gotten me thinking. Has anyone done this before? I know that Libronix is the much more common interface. Are there any resources for the historic lectionary, or even LSB in general, that have been put together for Libronix? The LSB daily lectionary, for example.

I think this is a huge resource that the computer savvy pastor can make excellent use of. I would be interested in your thoughts.

Studium Exitare

While hunting around on the web I ran across the following website:

Studium Exitare

It is the journal of confessional language studies at Martin Luther College (WELS), in New Ulm, Minnesota.

The meat and potatoes of this site is translations of Latin and German works by confessional Lutherans, from Chemnitz on down through the early 20th century (including of course August Pieper, etc.).

The resources are wonderful! Many if not all of these documents translated are not available elsewhere in English. In a quick perusal I found sermons, theological treatises, biographies, devotional material, exegetical qor
