It seems appropriate on Maundy Thursday that we remember and rejoice that it has recently been announced that Mikail Gorbachev is a Christian.

For those of us who grew up in the Reagan years, Gorbachev holds a unique position as the communist who started to break down the walls of the Soviet Union. What a great Holy Week gift!

I can’t really figure out the St. Francis connection, especially for someone who is coming from an Eastern Orthodox world. But I suppose there are a lot worse saints to want to emulate…
